Have you ever noticed that the more you think about something—whether it’s a problem, a worry, or even a happy moment—the bigger it feels? That’s because our attention is like water to a plant. Whatever we give our time and energy to will grow.
Lately, I’ve been thinking about how much outside influences affect me. The news, social media, and even other people’s stress can take over my thoughts if I let them. When that happens, I feel drained, overwhelmed, or even stuck in a negative cycle. Instead of focusing on what makes me feel strong and hopeful, I end up feeding frustration and fear.
The Power of Choosing What to Focus On
Our attention is one of our most valuable tools, yet we often waste it on things that don’t help us. The world is full of distractions—many designed to keep us stressed, angry, or worried. But what if we took control of our focus?
Some people go through really hard times but still find peace. How? They protect their energy. They decide where to put their attention, choosing to focus on what they can control instead of getting lost in things they can’t change.
I realized recently that my focus was being pulled in too many directions. I was waking up and checking the news right away, filling my mind with bad stories before my day even started. That heavy energy followed me through the day, affecting my work, my relationships, and even my creativity. But once I started being more mindful about what I let into my thoughts, I began to feel lighter, calmer, and more in control.
How to Shift Your Focus
If you’re feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, or stuck, try these simple changes:
Notice What You Take In – Pay attention to what you read, watch, and listen to. Do these things make you feel good or bad? Do they lift you up or bring you down?
Set Boundaries on Negativity – You don’t have to ignore the world’s problems, but you also don’t have to let them take over your mind. Choose when and how you engage with news and social media.
Start Your Day with Intention – Instead of checking your phone right away, take a few moments for yourself. Breathe deeply, stretch, or think about what you want your day to feel like.
Focus on What You Can Control – When something is bothering you, instead of just thinking about the problem, ask: What can I do about it? Even small actions can help shift your mindset from stress to confidence.
Look for the Good – Make it a habit to notice positive things. Small moments of kindness, progress, or beauty can change the way you see the world.
Your Attention Is Your Power
There will always be distractions, stress, and negativity in the world. But you don’t have to let them control you. You get to decide where your energy goes, and that choice can change your life.
So today, what will you focus on? Fear and frustration? Or hope, strength, and growth?
Because whatever we focus on—grows.
